General
Orthodontics is the dental specialty where we straighten teeth and improve smiles. However, smiles are only a part – albeit an important part - of the story. There are also dental health implications:
- Good tooth alignment makes cleaning more efficient, which is essential to prevent gum disease
-
Well fitting upper / lower teeth can help to alleviate problems with jaw movements (TMJ problems).

It has been possible to correct uneven teeth for many years now, but in the early days the braces used to move the teeth were fairly obtrusive and inefficient. However, in more recent times appliances have become more sophisticated and able to control tooth movement in all planes. In addition to this we can now work with a young person’s growth to help achieve better results in shorter times. Add to these developments, the fact that appliances have become much less noticeable and the result is that Orthodontics has become available to a very much wider range of patients – young and old alike.
